OAK CREEK, Wis. (Oct. 18, 2024) — The LGBTQIA+ community encompasses a diverse range of sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions. While strides have been made toward acceptance and equality, many within this community continue to face systemic challenges impacting their mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Here are five key issues affecting LGBTQIA+ individuals, with a focus on the pervasive problem of transphobia.

1. Transphobia and Violence Against Transgender Individuals

Transphobia, the fear, hatred, or discrimination against transgender people, remains a significant issue despite growing awareness. Transgender and non-binary individuals experience disproportionately high rates of violence, harassment, and discrimination in various aspects of life, including healthcare, education, employment, and even within their own families.

Research from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) reveals that Black transgender women are particularly vulnerable, facing alarming rates of physical and sexual violence.
